Getting started

File an Individualized Home Instruction Plan (IHIP) with your local school district each year. The IHIP must list the subjects you'll cover, the materials you'll use, and the number of instructional hours.

Quarterly reports

New York requires quarterly progress reports submitted to your school district — four times per year. These reports document what your student has learned in each required subject.

Annual assessment

Each year you must complete an annual assessment. Options include standardized testing or a portfolio review by a certified teacher.

Required subjects

New York has one of the most extensive required subject lists in the country. Review Part 100.10 of the New York Education Regulations carefully when creating your IHIP.

Keeping records

Thorough record-keeping is essential. Your IHIP, quarterly reports, and annual assessment form the core documentation of your homeschool.
