Homeschooling in Maryland

Regulation: Moderate

Annual portfolio review or umbrella school enrollment required.

Maryland families choose between two main homeschool paths: direct supervision by the local school system, or enrollment under a church umbrella school.

Option 1: Portfolio Review

Teach independently and submit a portfolio for annual review by your local school system.

How to start
Notify your local school superintendent of your intent to homeschool.
Required subjects
English, math, science, social studies, art, music, health, and PE.
Testing
Portfolio review by local school system representative.

Legal reference: Maryland Code §7-301

Option 2: Church Umbrella School

Enroll under a church umbrella school and follow their oversight instead.

How to start
Enroll in a church-affiliated umbrella school that provides supervision.
Required subjects
As required by the umbrella school.
Testing
As required by the umbrella school.

Legal reference: Maryland Code §7-301

Option 1 — Portfolio Review: Requires annual portfolio review by your local school system. Keep thorough records throughout the year — work samples, reading lists, projects, and assessments all strengthen your portfolio.

Option 2 — Church umbrella school: Transfers oversight from the local school system to the umbrella organization. Popular with families who prefer church-based accountability over government oversight.
